Guns Laws

All throughout the United States the topic of gun laws is marked as a controversial topic. In light of current events regarding guns many belive that gun laws should be strict, and others think the existing laws should remain in place.

In my opinion, to protect more people around the world, we need to enforce more strict gun laws than we have today.

In just the year of 2017 there have been 244 mass shootings in the United States. This number is insanely high, there must be something done to our current gun laws in place to prevent the number of mass shootings from rising at such a drastic rate.

In the United States, most states require a permit, along with an age requirement, to become legally eligible to possess a firearm. Texas is a perfect example of a state that needs stricter gun laws. Anyone of any age can purchase a firearm, with the one exception of having a criminal record. Other states similar to Texas, where the process of purchasing a gun is very simple and easy with little requirements.

I think that all across America the legal age to purchase a firearm should at least 18, but ideally 21 or 25. The legal age to consume alcohol is 21 and at age 25 the 'teenage brain' has been fully developed, studies have proven how the 'teenage brain' and adult brain work differently.

There was a shooting in Parkland Florida on February 14, 2018, the suspect responsible for the shooting was a 19 year old male named Nikolas Cruz. Cruz walked into his school with a firearm, that he purchased legally. This shooting went down in history for being one of the deadliest school shootings in the US.

Nearly 45 states allow the open carry of firearms, however many states want to create stricter gun laws to protect shootings, like Parkland, from happening in the future. The government should make it illegal in all states across the United States for one to openly carry a firearm.

In light of all the shootings that have been going on recently, millions have been left feeling unsafe and unprotected by the government. There is a gun law in Florida that allows those with a licensed firearm, to carry their weapon in a variety of public places. An AR-15 rifle was legally brought into an airport by a man from Georgia, the fact that doing that is completely legal is frightening to many.

Although there have been a countless number of shootings and deaths as a result of poor gun laws, people are still against the idea of a stricter gun policy. Many people argue that it will be harder for people to protect themselves with more strict gun laws.

Some people claim that the gun laws are not the cause of the large number of shootings, but those that behold the weapon. Some also argue that, criminals can find a way to break the gun law easily, so more strict gun laws would not prevent the number of shooting from increasing.

However, there will always be someone who will break the law, and that has been statistically proven. Although placing a law sets the foundation to create a law that has the prospect of being respected and protected correctly. Even though many protect themselves using firearms, and find a sense of security in obtaining one, there  are alternative ways to remain safe.

Of course there are always two sides to a story, but do we really want more school shootings, more innocent children to die. Changing and creating new gun laws is something that needs to happen, there have been 101 mass shootings in the US within the span of 4 months, something needs to be done.

To decrease the amount of shootings happening today, we could place stricter gun laws and create more thorough background checks. The discontinuation of guns being sold at general stores such as Walmart would help to reduce the amount of guns being sold with careless background checks.

The laws regarding firearms in the US should be a lot more detailed and strict. This will promote the decrease of shooting, this is just a step into the right direction.
