American Soldier

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?
I like the picture where Fisher has his head bowed down in prayer. I think this picture has a deep meaning given the background go what has happened, that has been given in the caption of the picture.
B. How do the images work together to tell a story?
They all compliment each other by showing highs and lows of Fisher's journey and they all seem to display different emotion which the photographer definitely captured very well.
C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
They provide the viewer/reader with more insight on the story behind the picture, which can lead to invoking more emotion in the reader.
D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.
Ian Fisher joins the army and although he has to face some setbacks at the beginning of his journey he makes it to the army. In his journey he makes new friends and enemies. He came back at one point to go engagement ring shopping with his girlfriend, but they then faced a difficult breakup, which sends him into a deep depression and he resorts to drugs. When he returns to the army he is in deep trouble with his drug addiction, but is still allowed to go back to the military. After his time in Iraq he comes back to his new girlfriend and they get married.
E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
The captions are in present tense.
F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average? around 2-3 sentences in a caption
2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide? Fisher being accepted into the army
3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide? They explain what he's doing and sometimes the reasoning or background information
4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide?normally a quote from Fisher or his commander or comrade
5. Do any captions include a quote? yes
6. Are there any that have four sentences? yes

G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions?
If photos are taken that show enough of what is happeneing and the emotions being portrayed with a little bit of background information in the caption, you can successfully tell a story.
H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all?
It can prove to be helpful to the person looking at the pictures to receive background and know the story behind the camera.
