Cover types:
- Image based
This is the most common type of magazine cover. Most of the time, it consists of a person, or multiple people, posing for the camera. Usually, the model is a celebrity or a well-known person because, sometimes, the person on the cover is what draws people to read the magazine. Other times, the photo can be of a landscape, for a nature magazine, or food, for a nutrition magazine. The photos in image based covers always relate to what the publications is about.
- Illustration based
Illustrations used to be the only thing on magazine covers until photography became more simple and less expensive. The most notable magazine with an illustrated cover is The New Yorker, which didn't change their cover style when photography became more popular. Illustrated covers are usually to depict something funny or interesting. The magazines that have illustrated covers don't rely on newsstand sales, and they usually use computer generated illustrations.
- Type based
Type based magazine covers are very rare, but are used more often than illustrated covers. Type based covers are usually striking and bold, powerful in the way that they are formatted. Type covers can sometimes get a message across more easily than photographed covers. The most famous type based cover is "Oh My God, We Hit a Little Girl!" which was by George Lois. Type based covers are becoming increasingly more popular with handwritten calligraphy and letters.
- Concept based
Concept based covers are a mix of photography, illustrations and typed covers. Concept based covers are used in whatever way makes the message get across best. The main point of concept based covers is that they are supposed to be immediately understood by the audience. As a designer, you have to think if the audience will get it. This type of cover is very rare, but is seen most in business, news weekly, and independent magazines. One of the most famous concept style magazines is the New York Time Magazine.
