The Dispatch Issue #4

News Story

This story was covering the changes happening to the roads around Bowie. The construction going on near school is affecting traffic and student's commute to school, and it will stay like this for a while. This project will be helpful in the long run, but for now it will make things more difficult.

Who- Bowie staff and students, city officials
What- Major constructions are happening along MoPac that will have long lasting affects.
When- The events in the story will take place from now until the beginning of 2021.
Where- This is all happening along MoPac.
Why- Hopefully, the changes will improve traffic and provide better, safer routes.
How- These changes are being done by adding a new overpass and improving intersections.

Public information officer Christoper Bishop, junior Wolfgang Burst, principal Mark Robinson, senior Emily Lawson, economics teacher Ruth Narvaiz, and physics teacher Rey Torres were all quoted.

"Hopefully, the end product will alleviate traffic frustrations in the future and the frustration we we are experiencing now will all be worth it," was the strongest quote to me because it nicely summed up the entire story.

The lead story did make me want to keep reading.

Feature Story

This article featured Matt Flickinger, who is a teacher here at Bowie. He just recently published a book, and has had nothing but positive feedback towards it. The novel is young adult fiction and is said to be very well written and relatable.

Who- Matt Flickinger and his former students
What- Mr. Flickinger recently published his first book
When- Published recently, has been working on it for years though
Where- Bowie
Why- He wanted to to write a relatable story based off his experiences from being a teacher
How- He won a contest that allowed him to get started on publishing a book

Matt Flickinger, senior Megan Henry, and senior Megan Oldham, were all quoted.

I think the strongest quote is "It's not flowery and sugar coated and candy coated, it's real," because it was at the end of the story and convinced me that this was a book I should read.

The lead story did make me want to keep reading.

Opinion Story

This story covered the banning of the Russian team from the Olympics. Because of their previous drug abuse, they were given a lifetime ban from ever competing in the Olympics again.

Who- Russian athletes
What- Banned from Olympic games
When- Issues started as early as 2012, but they were officially punished this year
Where- In many Olympic games
Why- Many athletes were cheating during the games
How- They were using performance enhancing drugs.

Vladimir Putin was quoted indirectly, but there were no actual quotes since it was a commentary piece.

The lead sentence did make me want to finish the article.

Mary Poppins Photo Essay

The main photo at the top of the page is really good. I think the photographer did a good job of capturing a moment of the two on stage. There is balance and rule of thirds seen, and the main subjects are the two actors at the front. The picture is exposed properly, and there is a depth of field because you can see some characters in the back.

The photo titled, "Step in time" is also really good because it is funny and once again captured a good moment of the actor up on stage. Also, the lighting is good and the subject is nicely placed. There is rule of thirds here, and it is exposed properly. I see evidence of a deep depth of field because you can see other people on stage behind the main subject, who is the one at the front with the broom.

The last photo I chose from this page is the "Becoming Mary" one. I think this one is good because overall on the entire page, you can see the two sides of the student who plays Mary. I see balance because her hands are raised equally on either side. The main subject is Maddy Sparkes, and this photo she is in is exposed properly. The depth of field on this photo is pretty shallow.

Pottery Photo Essay

For the closeup photo of his hands working on the clay, I would say that it is a really nice photo. It is the largest and closest one to the top and does a good job of showing what the story will be about. I like how only the hands are in focus because it provides a lot of detail and impact. I see balance and lines in the photo. The hands balance out the clay, and the knife leads you eyes from the hands to the clay, the main subjects. It is exposed properly and there is a pretty shallow depth of field in this image.

The photo titled "Making an Impact" is good because it different from the others around it, since it is outside and not in an art room. As seen in the title, this is an important picture because it shows what Fen Hendon is doing for other people. The only rule of composition I see is balance. The two people on either side, who are the main subjects, balance each other out. The photo is exposed properly and there is a deep depth of field.

The middle photo on the bottom, "The final touch," seems a little too dark to me and the background might be a little too cluttered. However, I think it's good because it shows something new the subject can do. The main subject is the student in the middle, and like I already wrote, I think it might be a little underexposed. The depth of field seems pretty deep to me.

Entire Paper

My favorite picture is the one of the students who played Mary and Burt in Mary Poppins. It is my favorite because it just overall looks nice and captured a good moment. Rule of thirds and balance can be seen in the image. Also, there is a deep depth of field.

My least favorite image is the one of the students sitting at the new tables in the hallway. It isn't a bad photo, it's just a little hard to tell what it is because the shirts of the students, the table itself, and the lockers are all blending together.

I would have wanted to shoot at the musical or the Silver Start contest showcase because those two events seem like they would have a lot of possibilities to get a good picture at.

Overall, I think the photography in this issue was pretty good. I liked the pictures that told more of a story better than the ones that were just an image, if that makes sense.
